Astrology decans: why your sign fits you weird
Decans are the three ten degree slices inside every zodiac sign, thirty six across the whole wheel. Each slice picks up a second ruler from your own element, which is why two people born under the same sign three weeks apart can be nothing alike. Find your sun’s degree: 0 to 9 is first decan, 10 to 19 is second, 20 to 29 is third.
Somebody says it to me almost every week. My sister and I are the same sign and we are nothing alike. My coworker is my sign and I cannot stand him. I do not feel like a real Gemini.
For a long time the only answer on offer was a shrug and something vague about rising signs. There is a better answer, it is old, and it is decans.
Your sun sign is not one flat thing. It is a thirty day window, and the first ten days of a season do not feel like the last ten days of it. Anybody who has stood outside in early spring and then again in late spring already knows this in their body. The sky language just got specific about it, and decans are where it got specific.

What decans actually are
Every sign covers thirty degrees of the zodiac wheel. Split those thirty degrees into three equal pieces of ten degrees each and you have the decans. Twelve signs, three slices apiece, thirty six total.
Ten degrees of the sun’s movement works out to roughly ten days. So your sign is not a personality, it is a stretch of the year, and decans tell you which part of that stretch you were standing in.
This did not come out of nowhere and it did not come out of mysticism. It came from people watching the same year happen over and over and refusing to round off. Somebody noticed the year has four shapes. Then twelve. Then somebody noticed twelve was still too blunt, because the light at the start of a season and the light at the end of it are not doing the same thing, and neither is the weather, and neither are the people living inside it.
Thirty six slices of about ten days. That is what decans are, and that is what happens when you pay attention to the solar cycle for a very long time and keep sharpening the language for it.
Decans are not cusps
This is the mix-up I get in my comments constantly, so let me kill it here. A cusp is the supposed edge between two different signs, and it is not really a thing in the math. A decan is a division inside one sign, and it is entirely a thing in the math, because it is just degrees. Your sun is in exactly one sign at exactly one degree. No blending, no in between.
How decans work: the sub-rulers
Here is the machinery, and then I will stop doing machinery.
Each of the three slices gets a second ruler layered on top of your sign’s own ruler. Those sub-rulers run through the other signs of your own element, in order, starting with your sign itself.
Take Aquarius. The air signs are Aquarius, Gemini and Libra. So Aquarius first decan is ruled by Saturn, which is Aquarius doubled. Second decan picks up Gemini, so Mercury. Third decan picks up Libra, so Venus.

Same structure for every sign. The first decan is always the sign doubled. The second and third pick up the other two signs of your element, which is why decans never drag you outside your own element. They flavor you, they do not replace you.
I use traditional rulers for this, so Saturn for Aquarius, Mars for Scorpio, Jupiter for Pisces. Layer the modern co-rulers on if that is how you work. The structure does not change.
The three positions decans describe
Forget the rulers for a second, because this is the part that makes people go oh. It is about the season rather than the symbol.

First decan. The season just arrived.
The turn is new and there is nothing else mixed in yet. This is the sign at its most undiluted. If somebody reads you a textbook description of your sign and you think yes, exactly, that is me, you are probably first decan. You are the sign doubled.
Second decan. The season is fully in.
Nobody is adjusting anymore, this is just what it is now. The sign at its most established, with a clear second flavor on it. And that second flavor is usually what people notice about you first, before they ever get to your actual sign.
Third decan. The season is handing off.
You can feel the next thing coming. This is the most blended and the most complicated, because you are carrying your own sign, a third flavor, and a door standing half open to whatever is next. Third decan people are the ones who say I never feel like a real Leo. You are. You are just the version already reaching.
None of the three is better than the others. Decans are three places to stand in the same stretch of year, not a ranking.
Decan dates for all twelve signs
Two things before the table.
The decan dates move by about a day depending on your birth year. I checked this across six decades. If your birthday sits anywhere near an edge, do not take my word for it, pull your chart and read the degree. This is the single thing people get wrong about astrology decans, and I am going to prove exactly why further down using my own birthday.
The seasonal notes are northern hemisphere, because that is the light pattern this language was built from. Southern hemisphere, the structure holds, the weather does not.
| Sign | Decan | Dates | Sub-ruler | In one line |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | I | Mar 21 – 30 | Mars | Already moving before you finish the sentence |
| II | Mar 31 – Apr 10 | Sun | Same engine, now with an audience | |

| Taurus | I | Apr 21 – 30 | Venus | Comfort as an entire worldview, and will not be rushed |
| II | May 1 – 10 | Mercury | Taste rather than appetite, notices the flaw | |
| III | May 11 – 21 | Saturn | Builds things meant to outlast them | |
| Gemini | I | May 22 – 31 | Mercury | Curious about everything, committed to almost none of it |
| II | Jun 1 – 11 | Venus | Makes everybody in the room feel clever, and knows it | |
| III | Jun 12 – 21 | Saturn | The Gemini with a thesis, will hold a position for years | |
| Cancer | I | Jun 22 – Jul 2 | Moon | Knows the temperature of the room before anybody speaks |
| II | Jul 3 – 12 | Mars | The protectiveness with teeth, and it remembers | |
| III | Jul 13 – 23 | Jupiter | Gives too much and calls it love | |
| Leo | I | Jul 24 – Aug 2 | Sun | Warm, unembarrassed, quietly wounded if you forget to notice |

| Virgo | I | Aug 24 – Sep 2 | Mercury | Sees every flaw including all of their own, constantly |
| II | Sep 3 – 13 | Saturn | Builds the system and actually executes it | |
| III | Sep 14 – 23 | Venus | Notices everything, minds far less, still catches the typo | |
| Libra | I | Sep 24 – Oct 3 | Venus | Will genuinely lose sleep over somebody being upset |
| II | Oct 4 – 13 | Saturn | The fairness with a spine, holds the line | |
| III | Oct 14 – 23 | Mercury | Charm at speed, talks you around and you enjoy it | |
| Scorpio | I | Oct 24 – Nov 2 | Mars | All or nothing, completely allergic to being deceived |
| II | Nov 3 – 12 | Jupiter | Intensity turned mystical, runs on intuition, usually right | |
| III | Nov 13 – 22 | Moon | The warmest of the three and the slowest to forgive | |
| Sagittarius | I | Nov 23 – Dec 2 | Jupiter | The most optimistic stretch on the entire wheel |
| II | Dec 3 – 12 | Mars | The belief with a body behind it, the crusader | |
| III | Dec 13 – 22 | Sun | The belief turned into story and warmth, the teacher | |
| Capricorn | I | Dec 23 – 31 | Saturn | Was an adult at eleven and will be fun at sixty |
| II | Jan 1 – 10 | Venus | Wants the good life at the end of the climb, not just the climb | |
| III | Jan 11 – 20 | Mercury | Changes route mid-climb and still summits | |
| Aquarius | I | Jan 21 – 30 | Saturn | The principle outranks the room, least sentimental on the wheel |
| II | Jan 31 – Feb 9 | Mercury | Processes out loud, at you, at length, whether or not you asked | |
| III | Feb 10 – 18 | Venus | Still detached, but it comes out as fairness and connection | |
| Pisces | I | Feb 19 – 28/29 | Jupiter | Merges with the room and carries what was never theirs |
| II | Mar 1 – 10 | Moon | Feeds you before asking what is wrong | |
| III | Mar 11 – 20 | Mars | Dreamy and dangerous, and it sees straight through you |
Traditional rulers throughout. Boundaries computed with Swiss Ephemeris and checked across six decades of birth years, accurate to about a day. Your own chart degree is always the authority.
How to spot the difference in a room
Lists of traits are useless, because everybody reads a list and finds themselves in all three. So here is how I actually test it. One situation, three people, and watch what each one does.
Aries
Somebody just got treated unfairly in front of all three. The first decan is already across the room. The second organizes everybody and makes a speech about it. The third wants to talk about why this keeps happening, and to who, and what we are going to do about the system.
Leo
Somebody talks over all three at dinner. First decan goes quiet and hurt and you find out two weeks later. Second decan takes the point and wins the argument out loud, at length, entertainingly. Third decan ends the conversation in one sentence and the table goes silent.
Taurus
Offer all three a nicer apartment that costs more. First wants to know if the bed is comfortable. Second has already found the three things wrong with it. Third is calculating what that money does over ten years instead.
Virgo
All three spot the same mistake in somebody’s work. First cannot sleep about whether to mention it. Second has already fixed it and built a process so it does not happen again. Third mentions it kindly, over coffee, and it lands.
Aquarius
The group makes a decision all three think is wrong. First says so once, clearly, and then does not participate. Second argues about it for two hours and is still texting you at midnight. Third quietly gets three people alone and changes the outcome without anybody feeling attacked.
Cancer
Somebody hurts a person all three of them love. First takes the hurt one home and feeds them. Second finds out exactly what happened and that person is finished. Third cries about it and then, worryingly, forgives everybody.
Scorpio
All three find out they were lied to. First confronts it, completely, immediately, and then it is over. Second already knew and was waiting to see how long you would go. Third is not angry, which is worse, and something between you has permanently closed.
Pisces
A friend is in real trouble. First absorbs the feeling until they are as wrecked as the friend. Second shows up with food and a plan for the week. Third quietly finds out who did this.
How to find yours in thirty seconds
Pull your chart, look at your sun, read the degree in front of the sign.

Zero through nine degrees is first decan. Ten through nineteen is second. Twenty through twenty nine is third. That is the whole method, and once the chart is open it takes about eight seconds.
The decan dates in the table above are accurate to roughly a day, which is fine for most people and not fine at all if your birthday sits near an edge. Degrees are the authority, decan dates are the shortcut. If you want the underlying math, the Swiss Ephemeris from Astrodienst is what serious chart software runs on, and it is what I used to check every boundary on this page.
And here is where it opens up. Your sun is not the only placement with a decan. Every placement has one. Your moon has a decan. Your Venus has a decan, which is an entire conversation about how you love. Your Mars has a decan, which explains a great deal about how you fight and how you spend energy. If this cracked something open for you, Venus and Mars are where people have the biggest reactions, and that is the layer I work in inside The Seasonal Blueprint.

Where decans break
I am not going to sell you a system without telling you where it stops working.
Ariana Madix and Stassi Schroeder are both born on June 24. Same calendar day. They have thrown competing birthday parties about it. Both of them sit at about three degrees of Cancer, which is first decan, Moon on Moon, Cancer doubled.
Same sign. Same decan. Same day. And if you have watched five minutes of either of them you know those are not the same person. Not in how they fight, not in how they love, not in what they do when a room turns on them.
So decans did not do that. They cannot have.
Then there is my own birthday
I did not expect this to end up on the page. I am March tenth. Somebody I have known for most of my adult life is March eighth. Two Pisces suns one degree and thirty eight minutes apart, which in synastry terms is basically the same sun. For years I assumed we were the same decan, because two days is nothing.
So I pulled it. March eighth, nineteen ninety three, is eighteen degrees and thirty three minutes of Pisces. Second decan, Moon ruled. Settled in every year I checked.
My own chart is twenty degrees and eleven minutes of Pisces. Third decan, Mars ruled. By eleven arcminutes.

Then I went and found the exact moment the sun crossed twenty degrees of Pisces on my birthday, and it happened at 2:35 in the afternoon. I was born at 6:58 that evening. I missed the other decan by four hours and twenty three minutes. Born before lunch, same date, same year, same city, and I am in the other one.
That is the whole argument for reading your degree instead of trusting a date range, including mine.
The decan is not the person. It is the ten degree correction on a thirty degree statement, and that is all it was ever supposed to be.
What decans actually do, and what they do not
Two women born the same day are different people. Two suns a degree and a half apart are different people. The moons are different, the risings are different, the Venuses and the Marses are different, and then there is an entire life that happened to each of us that no chart was ever going to account for.
What astrology decans actually do is smaller and more useful than the oversell. They explain why your sign fits you the way it fits you. It is the answer to I never feel like a real Gemini. It is why the generic read kept missing you by a little, every single time, in the same direction.
That is genuinely worth having. It is just not the whole person, and anybody telling you otherwise is selling something.
If you want the layer underneath this, your sun, moon and rising is the next honest step, and what the zodiac symbols are actually diagrams of is the piece that made decans click for a lot of people.
Common questions about decans
What is my decan?
Look at the degree of your sun in your birth chart. Zero to nine degrees is first decan, ten to nineteen is second, twenty to twenty nine is third. The date ranges in the table above will get you there too, unless your birthday sits near a boundary.
Do decans change my sign?
No. In astrology decans the sub-ruler always comes from your own element, so it flavors your sign without ever pulling you out of it. A third decan Leo is still entirely a Leo, just the version already turning into Virgo season.
What if I was born right on a decan boundary?
Then the date ranges are not good enough for you and you need the degree. My own birthday is the example. Four hours decided mine, and the date range would have told me the wrong answer.
Are decans the same as cusps?
No, and this is the most common mix-up. A cusp is the supposed edge between two different signs. A decan is a division inside one sign. Cusps are not really a thing in the math, decans are, because decans are just degrees.
Which of the decans is strongest?
None of them. First is the most concentrated version of the sign, third is the most blended, and neither of those is a ranking. They are different weather in the same season.
Does my rising sign have a decan?
It does, and so does every planet in your chart. Decans are not a sun sign feature, they are a degree feature. Most people start with the sun because it is the one everybody already knows, but the moon and Venus decans tend to land harder once you get there.
Why are there three decans and not four or five?
Because three is what makes the element cycle work. Each sign hands its slices to the other two signs of its own element, and there are exactly three signs per element. Thirty degrees divided by three is ten, and ten degrees is roughly ten days.
Do the decan dates change every year?
They shift by about a day, because the calendar year and the solar year do not match perfectly and leap years drag everything around. That is why I keep saying read your degree. One day of drift is nothing until your birthday is the one sitting on the line.
Go find yours
When you say your sign, you are not claiming a personality. You are naming where you were standing in the year, and whether you got there when the season was brand new, or fully itself, or already turning into the next thing.
All three of those are your sign. They are just not the same weather.
I broke decans all the way down on the podcast, and I put all thirty six of them on a single printable page so you are not scrolling back through this post to find your row. Both are free.
Then come back and tell me yours. Not your sign, your decan. First, second or third, and whether the tell landed or missed. Decans are the part nobody in my comments ever agrees on and that is honestly the fun of it.
