Venus retrograde, and what it is actually asking
Venus retrograde is the stretch of about six weeks, once every nineteen months, when Venus appears to move backward against the stars because Earth is overtaking her on the inside of her orbit. Nothing goes wrong. What changes is that the part of life Venus governs, what you value and who you want near you, stops moving forward and starts getting re-read.
I keep this page updated every cycle rather than writing a new one each time, because the mechanics never change and only the dates do. The current window is at the top. Everything below it is true of every venus retrograde there has ever been.
Venus retrograde has a worse reputation than it earns. You have probably seen the lists telling you not to cut your hair, not to get married, not to buy anything nice and not to text anybody. I am not going to write you one of those. What I am going to do is tell you what is physically happening, what that has historically been used to describe, and then be honest with you about where the description holds and where it falls apart.
The 2026 venus retrograde, to the minute
The venus retrograde 2026 window opens on Saturday 3 October at 3:16am Eastern, at 8 degrees 29 minutes of Scorpio. She turns direct on Friday 13 November at 7:28pm Eastern, at 22 degrees 51 minutes of Libra. That is forty one days and seventeen hours of apparent backward motion, covering fifteen and a half degrees of sky.

The thing about this cycle that nobody is going to tell you
The Sun catches Venus at 11:44pm on 23 October. Mercury stations retrograde at 3:13am on 24 October. Those two events are three hours and twenty nine minutes apart.
That matters because the Sun conjunct Venus is not a footnote, it is the hinge of the entire venus retrograde. It is the moment Venus passes directly between us and the Sun, the middle of the backward stretch, and the point where whatever this cycle is about stops being a question and becomes an answer. In the old texts it is the new moon of the Venus cycle. Everything before it is dismantling. Everything after it is rebuilding.
And this time, Mercury turns around in the same night. Both planets then station direct on the same day, 13 November, eight and a half hours apart. They open together, they turn together and they finish together.
So for twenty days, from 24 October to 13 November, you have venus retrograde and Mercury retrograde running at once, both stationing in Scorpio. That overlap is not rare enough to be a once in a lifetime event, but it is rare enough that most people reading this will not have consciously lived through one.
One honest caveat before you build a month around that. Stations are exact moments in a slow process. Venus is functionally stationary for days either side of 3 October, not just at 3:16am. Treat the times as anchors, not as a starting pistol.
What venus retrograde actually is
Venus does not reverse. Nothing in the solar system reverses. Venus orbits the Sun in 225 days and we orbit it in 365, which means she is on the inside lane moving faster than we are. Roughly every nineteen months she comes up behind us, draws level, and passes between Earth and the Sun.
During the weeks around that pass, Venus appears against the background stars to slow down, stop, drift backward, stop again and resume. It is the same effect as overtaking a car on the motorway. For a stretch, the car you are passing looks like it is rolling backward against the treeline. It is not. You are just going faster on a tighter curve.
That is the entire mechanism of venus retrograde. It is a geometry of viewpoint, and it has been observable and predictable for as long as anyone has bothered to write down where Venus was.
Why the backward part got a meaning attached to it
The venus retrograde meaning people repeat did not fall out of the sky with the planet. Here is where I have to be careful with you, because this is the join between something measurable and something interpretive, and most astrology writing glues them together without telling you.
Venus is the planet that got assigned to attraction, value, taste, money and the terms on which you connect to people. That assignment is old and it is consistent across a lot of separate traditions, which is interesting but is not the same as being proven. When the planet that describes wanting appears to move backward, the language that developed around it is a language of return: reviewing, revisiting, re-evaluating, reconsidering.
What I can tell you honestly is that the description is coherent. A retrograde is a planet retracing ground it has already covered. If Venus describes what you value, a period where Venus retraces is a reasonable way to describe a period of re-valuation. What I cannot tell you is that the sky causes it. I do not build on the mechanism. I build on the description.
Why this venus retrograde reads differently to the last one
A venus retrograde is not one flavour. It takes its character from where in the wheel it happens, and this one is unusual because it happens across two signs that could not be more different for Venus specifically.
Venus retrograde in Scorpio, where she is least at home
Libra is Venus’s own sign. Scorpio belongs to Mars. In the old language Venus is in detriment in Scorpio, which is a blunt way of saying the sign asks her to work in a way that does not suit her. Libra wants balance, agreement, the thing that is pleasant for everybody. Scorpio wants the truth even when the truth costs the arrangement.
So this venus retrograde begins with Venus in the one place where being agreeable does not work. She stations at 8 degrees Scorpio, in the first decan, the one ruled by Mars. In my own decan writing I call that stretch the drop: what is going is going, and there is no pretending left.
She finishes in Libra, in the decan that has to decide
Then she backs out of Scorpio on 25 October and finishes the retrograde in her own sign. She stations direct at 22 degrees 51 Libra, which is Libra’s third decan, ruled by Mercury. That is the stretch I call the decision, where the pretty part ends and something has to be chosen.
Read those two ends together and the shape of this cycle is not subtle. It opens in the sign that refuses to let you keep pretending, and it closes in the decan that will not let you keep weighing. A venus retrograde that starts with what is actually true and ends with having to pick.
What venus retrograde is not
This is the section I most want you to read, because the internet has made this transit sound like a six week curfew.
It is not a ban on haircuts
There is no mechanism by which the apparent motion of a planet affects a haircut. The advice exists because Venus is associated with appearance and somebody extended the association into a rule. If you want to wait, wait, and enjoy the wait. If you have roots, go.
It is not a ban on relationships
People meet, commit and marry during every venus retrograde and a normal proportion of those work out. What is fair to say is that this is a period where the terms of a connection tend to get looked at rather than assumed, and that looking is more useful before a commitment than after one. That is a reason to have the conversation, not a reason to cancel the wedding.
It does not make your ex text you
Sometimes an ex does text you during a venus retrograde. An ex also texts people in March. When a period is framed as the time old connections return, you notice the ones that do and you forget the eleven quiet months. That is not the sky, that is attention.
It is not a prediction
Nothing on this page tells you what will happen. A transit describes a condition, the way a forecast describes a climate. What you do inside the condition is still entirely yours.
Venus retrograde is not a reversal. It is a review, and the difference is that a review has to be read before it can be acted on.
How to actually work with a venus retrograde
The most useful thing I can give you is not a list of prohibitions. It is a question, and one practice.
The question
Venus describes what you want and what you think things are worth. So the question for any venus retrograde is: what did I agree to when I was not paying full attention?
That covers a lot. A rate you set three years ago and never raised. A standing arrangement with a friend where you always travel to them. A subscription. A dynamic where you are always the one who apologises first. None of those were decisions exactly. They were defaults that hardened.
The practice
Write down five things you are currently paying for, in money or in time or in patience. Next to each one, write what you actually get. Then put the list away until the retrograde ends and read it again.
That is the whole exercise, and the reason it works is that it separates noticing from deciding. The thing that makes retrogrades feel chaotic is trying to do both at once while everything is still moving. Notice in October. Decide after 13 November.
The one thing I would genuinely hold
If you can, do not sign a permanent financial commitment inside the shadow on something you have not already researched. Not because Venus will curse it, but because the whole period is characterised by information arriving late, and this particular venus retrograde has Mercury retrograde sitting inside it for twenty days. Two planets associated with contracts and valuation, both retracing, at once. That is a practical argument, not a superstitious one.

If you were born during a venus retrograde
About eight percent of people are born with Venus retrograde in the natal chart, and it is a completely different thing to the transit. A transit is weather. A natal placement is climate. If you have it, you are not going through a venus retrograde, you have been running one your whole life.
The short version is that natal Venus retrograde tends to describe somebody whose sense of what is valuable was arrived at rather than inherited. Taste that had to be worked out privately, worth that was never simply assumed. Questions about venus retrograde
How often does venus retrograde happen?
Roughly every nineteen months, which makes it the rarest of the personal planet retrogrades. Mercury does it three or four times a year. After this one ends on 13 November 2026, the next venus retrograde does not begin until 10 May 2028, at 19 degrees Gemini.
How long does venus retrograde last?
About forty to forty three days of backward motion. This cycle runs forty one days and seventeen hours. Counting the shadow either side, the full arc is 106 days, from 31 August to 15 December 2026.
What is the retrograde shadow?
The stretch of sky Venus covers three times: forward, backward, then forward again. The pre-shadow starts when Venus first reaches the degree she will later station direct at, and the post-shadow ends when she gets back to where she first turned around. It is useful because things that begin in the pre-shadow are often the things that get reviewed during the retrograde.
Should I avoid buying anything during venus retrograde?
No. Buy your groceries. The reasonable version of that advice is about large purchases you have not researched, and it applies for a practical reason rather than a mystical one: this is a period where you are more likely to be working from incomplete information, especially with Mercury retrograde inside it for twenty days.
What is the Sun conjunct Venus moment?
It is the exact middle of the retrograde, when Venus passes between Earth and the Sun. This cycle it lands at 11:44pm Eastern on 23 October at 0 degrees 45 Scorpio. It works like the new moon of the Venus cycle: the point where the reviewing turns into something you can act on.
Does venus retrograde affect everyone the same way?
No, and this is the honest limit of any transit writing including mine. Where it lands in your chart depends on your rising sign, which decides which house the retrograde falls in. That is the difference between a period about money and a period about a relationship, and a general page cannot tell you which.
Is venus retrograde a bad time to start a relationship?
It is a bad time to start one you have not looked at properly, which is true in every month of the year. What is specific to a venus retrograde is that the looking happens whether you invite it or not.
Why do the dates I see elsewhere differ by a day?
Time zones, almost always. Venus stations at 3:16am Eastern on 3 October, which is already 8:16am in London and 7:16pm in Sydney. Every time on this page is Eastern.
