Every list of zodiac traits you have ever read is a compression of something, and nobody tells you what. Aries is impulsive. Taurus is stubborn. Scorpio is intense. Those are not descriptions. They are an answer with the working scrubbed off.

How to use this translation key
Traditional astrology says Aries is impulsive and aggressive. Nobody ever answers the obvious follow up, which is why is Aries impulsive rather than something else.
This key asks a different question: why did humans attach those two words specifically to late March and early April, and keep attaching them for two thousand years?
The seasonal answer is that early spring survival ran on a narrow window. The thaw arrives, conditions are briefly workable, and nothing about them is guaranteed to last. Moving first is not a character flaw in that situation. It is the only strategy that fits the conditions.
That is the translation, and every sign below gets the same treatment. The traditional zodiac traits, then the stretch of the year they are describing, then what that actually looks like in a person, then the specific calendar fact that makes it make sense.
One thing worth saying before you start. I am not claiming the season causes anything about anybody. The zodiac is the system here. What the earth is doing across the year is the evidence for why the system’s descriptions hold together, not the mechanism behind them. All twelve, and what the zodiac traits are really describing

Aries
Impulsive, aggressive, selfish, reckless, domineering, hot headed
The year has just turned over. Light is winning for the first time in six months and conditions have become workable, but nothing is established, nothing is proven and the window is not guaranteed to stay open. Every one of the traditional zodiac traits for this sign is describing behaviour that is correct under exactly those conditions.
Of all the zodiac traits in the list this is the easiest to spot. It looks like somebody starting before they have a plan, and being genuinely puzzled that this bothers you. It looks like a person who would rather be wrong quickly than right slowly. It looks like a very short fuse for meetings.
The equinox is the hinge. Before it the dark is winning, after it the light is. Nothing else in the year turns that sharply, and a sign built on that turn is going to be built for the moment things become possible rather than the long stretch where they stay possible.
Taurus
Stubborn, materialistic, lazy, possessive, indulgent, slow
The zodiac traits attached to Taurus all point the same way. There is finally enough, and the conditions that were tentative a month ago have settled, and the question has changed from can I start this into can I keep this. A strategy tuned to that moment is going to prioritise durability over speed and comfort over novelty, because both of those are how you find out whether a thing lasts.
It looks like a person who will not be hurried and does not experience that as a problem. It looks like caring a lot about the quality of a specific object. It looks like refusing to change a decision that is working, which reads as obstinacy to whoever wants it changed.
Mid spring is the longest genuinely stable window in the year. Not the most abundant and not the brightest, but the stretch where conditions hold still long enough to build something on. Slowness is only a flaw if the ground is moving.
Gemini
Two faced, flaky, superficial, restless, gossipy, inconsistent
Read the Gemini zodiac traits against the calendar and they stop being insults. Everything is alive at once, and there is more happening than any one plan can hold, and the conditions that were stable a month ago are now shifting fast enough that commitment becomes a liability. A strategy for that moment gathers widely, holds loosely and switches the second the situation does.
It looks like somebody with four projects and no apparent hierarchy between them. It looks like a person who knows a bit about everything and gets accused of depth problems by people who have never had to track that many variables at once.
By late spring the year has more going on in it than at any other point. Inconsistency is only a failure if the environment stayed still, and in this stretch it demonstrably does not.
Cancer
Clingy, moody, oversensitive, smothering, passive aggressive, withdrawn
The solstice is the peak of the light and the exact moment it starts going. Everything from here is a slow decline, and the strategy that fits is building something safe now, while surplus makes it easy. That is forecasting, not fear, and it is the least understood of all the traditional zodiac traits.
The Cancer zodiac traits describe the opposite of what people assume. It looks like a person who runs the worst case scenario in the background at all times while appearing perfectly calm. It looks like getting very attached very fast to a small number of people. It looks like going quiet rather than fighting.
The summer solstice is the only point in the year that is simultaneously the maximum and the beginning of the decline. Every other peak is just a peak. Being tuned to that specific doubleness is what produces a sign everybody calls moody.
Leo
Attention seeking, vain, arrogant, dramatic, self centred, needy
The Leo zodiac traits are the most literal in the whole system. Maximum light, maximum heat, and no cover anywhere. Whatever you are is visible whether you would like it to be or not. The strategy that works is deciding to be good at being seen, because hiding is simply not on the menu in this stretch of the year.
It looks like generosity that comes with a spotlight attached. It looks like a person who is genuinely warmer than most people and also genuinely wants you to notice. It looks like taking a slight personally that somebody else would not have registered.
Peak summer is the only stretch with no shade in it, literally and structurally. A sign calibrated to exposure is going to look like it wants exposure, when what it actually has is a very well developed response to not being able to avoid it.
Virgo
Critical, fussy, cold, perfectionist, nitpicking, anxious
The light is measurably going and peak summer has closed. The question is no longer how do I get more, it is what of this actually works and what am I about to carry into the hard part for no reason. That is assessment, and assessment is what produces every one of the zodiac traits people file under critical.
It looks like somebody who notices the one thing that is wrong before they mention the nine that are right. It looks like refusing to accept that a thing is fine on your word. I have Virgo rising, so I will say the honest version: I do not want it perfect, I want it to work, and everybody who calls that perfectionism has picked the wrong word.
Late summer is the only stretch where abundance and decline overlap. There is still plenty, and you can already see it ending. That is the exact condition that rewards sorting, and the exact condition that makes people who sort look joyless to everyone still enjoying the plenty.
Libra
People pleasing, indecisive, superficial, conflict avoidant, vain, fake
Libra collects the zodiac traits people find hardest to say kindly. The equinox splits the day evenly and then the dark starts winning. This is not scarcity yet, it is the visible beginning of it, and that is a very specific social situation. When there is plenty nobody negotiates. When there is nothing negotiation is over. In between, everything is a trade.
It looks like a continuous background calculation about the other person. What do they need, how did that land, where are they in this. It looks like being unable to answer what do you want, because the process that would generate that answer has been running somebody else’s numbers all day.
Early autumn is the only stretch where the resources are visibly starting to divide while there is still enough to argue over. Indecision looks very different once you know the person is not choosing between two options, they are pricing four.
Scorpio
Intense, secretive, vengeful, obsessive, jealous, controlling
Scorpio gets the most dramatic zodiac traits of the twelve. Things are ending in front of you and effort does not reverse it. The strategy that works is going through rather than around, and being willing to let a thing finish dying instead of propping it up, because propping it up costs more than starting again does.
It looks like a person who is completely calm in the situation everybody else is panicking about, and completely unbothered by the small talk everybody else finds easy. It looks like withholding information as a default. It looks like refusing to pretend a thing is fine.
Mid autumn is the stretch where decline stops being gradual. Leaves do not fade, they drop. A sign calibrated to that does not experience endings as catastrophes, which is exactly why it unnerves people who do.
Sagittarius
Flaky, blunt, tactless, commitment phobic, preachy, unreliable
The light is nearly gone and there is no evidence in front of you that it comes back. What keeps a group moving through that is somebody who genuinely believes there is something past the horizon. Not optimism, which is a mood, but a working conviction strong enough to act on.
It looks like a person who will say the true thing in the room nobody else will say, and be surprised it landed badly. It looks like planning something enormous during the worst month of the year. It looks like leaving before the ending.
Late autumn is the darkest stretch before the solstice, which means it is the only part of the year where faith has to run entirely without evidence. Every one of the zodiac traits attached to this sign is describing what that looks like from outside.
Capricorn
Cold, joyless, workaholic, status obsessed, rigid, unfeeling
Every one of the Capricorn zodiac traits is describing a rationing problem. The solstice turns the light around on a day you cannot feel it at all, and will not for months. The strategy is doing the next thing correctly when nothing you do produces visible progress. That is endurance, and endurance looks like coldness because warmth is expensive and this stretch is a rationing problem.
It looks like a person who is consistently unimpressed. It looks like doing the work whether or not anybody noticed. It looks like a very long fuse and a very unforgiving memory.
Early winter is the only stretch where the fact of improvement and the experience of improvement come apart completely. The light is technically returning from day one. You will not feel it until March. A strategy for that gap is going to look joyless to anybody who has never had to live in one.
Aquarius
Detached, contrarian, aloof, unemotional, stubborn, weird
Individual effort has stopped producing anything and everybody can see it. What saves a group at that point is not more effort each, it is somebody standing back far enough to see the shape of the arrangement and willing to say out loud that it is not working.
It looks like a person who is warm one on one and unreachable in a crowd. It looks like refusing a consensus that everybody else has quietly agreed to. It looks like being right about something four years before it becomes obvious, and being disliked for it in the meantime.
Deep winter is the coldest stretch, which is genuinely the point at which cooperation stops being a nicety. The zodiac traits that read as coldness here are describing the distance required to see a system, not a lack of feeling about the people in it.
Pisces
Weak, escapist, unrealistic, victim, disorganised, oversensitive
Everything is worn through and nothing separates cleanly anymore. The strategy nobody volunteers for is letting the shape come apart so something else can form out of the same material. That is dissolution, and it sounds like giving up right up until you have been in a February where it was the only thing available.
The Pisces zodiac traits are the most badly translated of the twelve. It looks like a person who takes on the mood of the room without deciding to. It looks like knowing something about a situation without being able to say how. It looks like a very high tolerance for ambiguity and a very low one for fluorescent lighting.
Late winter is the only stretch where the old structures have failed and the new ones have not arrived. I have a Pisces sun and a Pisces moon, so I will say it plainly: the zodiac traits filed under weakness here are describing the specific competence of being able to function while nothing is defined yet.

Why the elements pick up zodiac traits of their own
The four elements pick up their own set of zodiac traits, and those follow the same logic.
Fire is called expressive because fire signs sit at points in the year where visible action is what the conditions reward. Aries at the opening, Leo at maximum exposure, Sagittarius carrying a group through the dark. Outward and immediate is not a temperament there, it is a fit.
Earth is called materialistic because earth signs sit where something has to physically hold. Taurus building it, Virgo assessing whether it held, Capricorn maintaining it through the worst of the year. Caring about what is real is the assignment.
Air is called detached because air signs sit where the problem is bigger than one person. Gemini with too much information, Libra with a negotiation, Aquarius with a failed system. All three require stepping back, and stepping back looks like distance.
Water is called emotional because water signs sit at the turns. Cancer at the solstice, Scorpio mid decline, Pisces at the dissolve. Being tuned to what is changing before anybody has named it is a real capability, and from outside it is indistinguishable from being upset a lot.
Zodiac traits, the short version
Every insult in the list of traditional zodiac traits is a strategy described by somebody it was inconvenient for.
Stubborn is what a foundation is called by the person who wanted it moved. Critical is what accuracy is called by whoever did not want it checked. Detached is what perspective is called from inside the group. Intense is what presence is called by somebody who wanted to leave.
None of that means the zodiac traits are wrong. Most of them are accurate compressions of something real. The problem is that a list you cannot reason about turns into a stereotype, and a stereotype is a thing you defend yourself against rather than use.
Put the sign back in its stretch of the year and the list stops being a verdict. It becomes a description of what a particular set of conditions rewards, which you can then check against your own life and either use or discard.
Common questions about zodiac traits
Are the traditional zodiac traits just wrong?
Mostly not. They are accurate compressions of something real, delivered without the reasoning that would let you check them. The problem is the missing reasoning, not the words.
Why do so many zodiac traits sound like insults?
Because they were written down by people the strategy was inconvenient for. A strategy that works for the person running it frequently annoys everybody standing next to them, and the annoyed party tends to be the one who names it.
Does this mean the weather when I was born shaped my personality?
No, and that is the misreading I most want to avoid. The zodiac is the system. What the earth does across the year is the evidence for why the system’s descriptions hold together, not a mechanism acting on anybody.
What if the traits for my sign do not fit me at all?
Then read the zodiac traits for your moon and your rising instead. Your sun is one placement out of many, and two people with the same sun can have the other two from opposite ends of the year, which is usually enough to make a sun sign description feel like it is about somebody else.
Does this work in the southern hemisphere?
The sign the sun is in does not change based on where you stand, so the dates hold. The lived seasonal experience is inverted, which is a real problem for a seasonal reading and one I have not solved. I would rather say that than pretend.
Which trait is the most misunderstood?
Weak, applied to Pisces. It is describing the ability to keep functioning while nothing is defined yet, which is one of the harder things a person can do and the opposite of what the word suggests.
