Quick answer: the zodiac season we’re in depends on today’s date, because each season is just a slice of the sun’s path through the year. As I write this, we’re in Cancer season, June 21 to July 22, which opens at the summer solstice. Right after it comes Leo. If you’re reading this on a different day, scroll to the calendar below and find the range your date falls into. That’s the season we’re all in right now.
But let me give you the part most “what season is it” answers leave out, because it’s the part that actually makes this useful. So What Zodiac Season is it?
A zodiac season is a real stretch of the year
A zodiac season isn’t a vibe someone invented. It’s a real segment of the solar year.
For as long as people have been alive, we’ve lived inside the sun’s cycle, watching the light get longer and shorter, the temperature climb and drop, the world wake up and wind down. Watch that closely enough, for enough generations, and you start noticing that each phase of the year carries its own quality.
Early summer does something different to you than deep winter does.
The zodiac is the language we built to name those phases.
So when I tell you it’s Cancer season, I’m telling you where the sun is in its yearly journey, and what that stretch of light tends to bring up in people.
The full zodiac season calendar
- Aries, March 21 to April 19 (early spring)
- Taurus, April 20 to May 20 (mid spring)
- Gemini, May 21 to June 20 (late spring)
- Cancer, June 21 to July 22 (early summer, starts at the solstice)
- Leo, July 23 to August 22 (high summer)
- Virgo, August 23 to September 22 (late summer)
- Libra, September 23 to October 22 (early autumn, starts at the equinox)
- Scorpio, October 23 to November 21 (mid autumn)
- Sagittarius, November 22 to December 21 (late autumn)
- Capricorn, December 22 to January 19 (early winter, starts at the solstice)
- Aquarius, January 20 to February 18 (mid winter)
- Pisces, February 19 to March 20 (late winter)
Look at Cancer, Libra, Capricorn, and Aries. Each one begins on a solstice or an equinox, the four hinge points of the sun’s year.
That’s not a coincidence someone added later. The whole system is built on the sun, which is exactly why the seasons and the signs line up the way they do.
What being “in a season” means for you
Here’s the thing people miss: the season we’re in belongs to everyone, not just the people born under that sign. Cancer season is happening to all of us, whether you’re a Cancer or not. It’s the current weather. Cancer season tends to pull everyone inward, toward home, rest, and the people you feel safest with. Leo season pushes the whole world back out into the light, louder and warmer and more visible. Virgo season makes everyone want to clean, sort, and get their life together.
You feel these shifts whether or not you track them. Ever notice your energy change with no clear reason, right around the same time every year? That’s usually a season turning under you. Once you can name it, you stop taking it personally and start working with it.
Quick questions
How often does the zodiac season change? About every 30 days. The sun spends roughly a month in each sign.
Is the current season the same as my sign? No, and this trips people up. The current season is the sky right now. Your sign is the season you were born into. I broke that difference down in its own post.
Do the dates shift each year? By a day at most, because the solstices and equinoxes wobble slightly. The ranges above are accurate year to year.
