What a house placements calculator is doing

Your birth time and city give the ascendant, which is the exact degree of the zodiac that was rising over the horizon at the moment you were born. In whole sign houses that entire sign becomes your first house, the next sign your second, and so on around the wheel.

That is why the birth time matters so much. The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, and a whole sign roughly every two hours. Ten minutes of error can move a cusp birth into the next sign, which is why this house placements calculator tells you when you are near one instead of quietly picking.

The two things most calculators get wrong

Historical daylight saving. Your birth time was local, and local meant different things in different decades. The United States ran daylight saving all year in 1974, Indiana mostly skipped it until 2006, Arizona still does not use it, and the rules changed again in 2007. This tool reads the full historical time zone database rather than assuming a fixed offset.

Times that never happened. On the day clocks spring forward, an hour is skipped. On the day they fall back, an hour happens twice. If your recorded birth time lands in either, you get told, because that is a genuine ambiguity and pretending otherwise is how a chart ends up silently wrong.

Questions about the house placements calculator

What if I only know roughly what time I was born? Run the house placements calculator with your best guess and look at the degree. If the ascendant sits in the middle of a sign you are probably safe, because it takes about two hours to move a whole sign. If it lands within a couple of degrees of a boundary the tool will say so, and then the exact minute genuinely matters.

My birth city is not in the list. Pick the nearest one that is. A city fifty miles away shifts the ascendant by roughly one degree, which almost never changes the sign. It only matters if you are already sitting on a cusp, and the tool tells you when you are.

Why does my rising sign differ from another site? Usually the time zone, and it is the main reason this house placements calculator exists. A lot of calculators apply today’s daylight saving rules to a birth in 1974 or 1985, which throws the ascendant out by a full hour and often a whole sign. This one reads the real historical rules for your city.

Is my birth data stored anywhere? No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing leaves your device. The only thing kept is your rising sign, saved locally so the horoscope page can fill itself in, and clearing your browser data removes it.

What is the difference between a house and a sign? The sign is the flavour of a planet. The house is the area of your life it operates in. Mars in Aries says how you go after things, Mars in the seventh house says you go after them through other people. You need both, and only the house needs a birth time.
